About Jean Marc Abbing
Jean-Marc Abbing studied Geology and Environmental Sciences at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and is working in the environmental arena since 1990. He has 16 years of environmental consultancy experience and 4 years of corporate environmental experience with Johnson & Johnson. He is working now as a consultant for DHV. He combines solid knowledge of legal environmental requirements and how to implement them into a complex business environment.
As an environmental consultant he covered many topics in the field of soil and groundwater contamination including risk assessment, environmental due diligence and management audits, environmental impact assessments and international institutional strengthening projects to support policies and law development.
In his corporate role in Johnson & Johnson he followed the development of European laws including REACH and the EU-GHS very closely and drove the impact assessment and implementation of REACH in the whole company. Besides that he was the spokes man of the company when talking to the European Commission.
In consultancy he has assisted and trained 100’s of staff in the understanding and implementation of REACh, often from a down–stream user perspective. He was the leading consultant in an REACH assistance program for the implementation of this law in Bulgaria.
Now he is leading the REACh practice within the company DHV.
Upcoming is the assistance with the new Classification, Labeling and Packaging Regulation (CLP-Regulation), which is based on the UN proposal for GHS (Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals). For large companies he developed a stepwise approach to transition from the existing system (the Substance and Preparation directives) to the EU-GHS (CLP).
About DHV Environment & Safety – Industry
DHV is an independent multidisciplinary engineering and consultancy firm, founded in 1917, with a staff of 4500 people worldwide. It originally started with activities related to the ongoing Dutch battle against water (after the heavy storms in 1915-16) but expanded since the 70’s through water sanitation into the field of environment and later safety.
In the 80’s DHV was one of the leading firms that developed and implemented soil surveys on contaminated sites. Furthermore DHV was one of the main contributors to the guidelines for requirements in the environmental permitting handbook of the Netherlands.
In 2000 the need for a separate industry group was identified and experienced consultants formed the nucleus of a new successful department Environment & Safety – Industry, within the company. The group expanded and consists now of a group of professionals with a unique focus on HSE products for industrial clients.
One of these practices is the support of companies with the implementation of REACh and EU-GHS.
